Marine
Travelling to Australia and working at The Deep has allowed me to photograph lots of marine life. The images from Australia are taken with a Canon Powershot S45 digital camera and underwater housing. The photographs taken at The Deep are from the dry side of the exhibits.
Fish are very sensitive to sudden changes like flashes or banging on the window. Please take care to turn your flash off when photographing aquarium animals. The Deep and other aquaria have a no flash photography policy. It maybe frustrating but the welfare of the subject should always be your priority, not your photo. Even if you don't see a sign, turn off your flash.
I had to wait for about 15 minutes for this shot until this Blue Spot Ribbontailed stingray had found a comfortable spot to rest. Rays are members of the shark family, although they have a venomous spine it is seldom used unless in self defence, like being stepped on or provoked. If you are paddling or rockpooling, in any country, it is advisable to wear a pair of old trainers or shoes. Remember to shuffle and give buried animals a chance to move.
