About Ferox Photography

Ferox Photography is basically me, Graham Hill, an amateur photographer. As a marine biologist and zoologist I have had to use photography extensively to catalogue species of animals. I was very surprised though to be asked on a number of occasions to showcase my work, by agencies requiring stock images, but also by friends and family, who have asked me to frame photographs as artwork.

It is certainly a great compliment for so many people to show an interest in my work. With the help of my sister, (www.marketingspark.co.uk) I have developed this website to display some of my work.

My full time job is Science Officer for The Deep aquarium in Hull. It is a high profile aquarium but also an educational, environmental and research charity. It takes the visitor on a journey through time and space, from the equator through to the poles and into deep ocean. We have over 3100 animals ranging from small coral reef fish to Sand Tiger sharks. I am responsible for conducting and coordinating the research projects we carry out; including nutrition, development of husbandry/veterinary techniques, overall fish health and supervision of university students. I also do quite a lot of diving for tank maintenance, feeding the sharks and fish as well as monitoring growth and health. It allows me to see a wide range of marine animals at very close quarters and is an incredibly exciting job!

Another aspect of my work is scientific text proof reading. I have been the scientific advisor to The Deep's Adult and Children's Guide Book (which includes a number of my photographs), advisor of content in the Colour History's children's marine biology book entitled "Heroes and Villains of the Sea" and the proof reading of interpretative material and graphics panels at The Deep with Dr Miranda McQuitty, Creative Consultant.

My fascination for the sea, natural history and wildlife like many biologists began when reading Sir David Attenborough's book "Life on Earth" as a kid. I studied BSc Honours Zoology at the University of Dundee, Scotland where I also learnt to dive, one of the most amazing things I have done in my life. It served to fuel my interest, particularly in marine life. After several years as a researcher I decided to study for an MSc in Marine Resource Development and Protection at Heriot-Watt University, Scotland. Whilst there, I progressed not only my knowledge, but also my diving, by becoming an HSE Part IV scientific commercial diver. It was then my love of photography began and I had my first experiences with underwater photography.

Where I have gained scientific knowledge of a particular animal or subject, I have tried to give a little information on biology, conservation or behaviour. I hope you find this useful when looking at the photographs. If you would like to know more on a particular animal or subject you are welcome to contact me and I will try to answer any questions you may have. To the best of my knowledge, the information I provide is accurate. If however, you read something you believe is incorrect please let me know.

My main focus in photography is wildlife, however when I was asked to be The Deep's photographer, I had to turn my hand to many different aspects of photography. For a biologist though, the opportunity to travel to Australia really fired up my photography and the rest as they say, is history.........
